Low-pressure wash plus wood brightener; no oiling on this project

The situation

Like all ipe left to the coastal elements, this Wild Dunes deck had weathered from its rich brown tone to a dull silver-grey. Sun, salt air, and Lowcountry humidity do this to even the best hardwood. The greying is natural and does not harm the wood, but most owners of an ipe deck bought it for the color.

Our approach

Ipe is dense, expensive, and easy to damage with the aggressive pressure washing that gets used on ordinary decks. We cleaned this deck gently at low pressure to lift the grey, weathered surface layer, then applied a wood brightener to restore the ipe's natural tone and even out its appearance. The homeowner chose cleaning and brightening only, so no oil was applied after the restoration.

Before and after

Weathered grey ipe deck boards before cleaning, Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms
Before: weathered to silver-grey
Restored ipe deck showing natural brown color after cleaning and brightening
After: cleaned and brightened

The result

The grey lifted and the deck's natural color came back, even across the boards. Honest note: restoration returns ipe to its best current state, not to factory-new lumber, and without an oil finish the wood will gradually weather again. For owners who want to hold the color longer, oiling after a clean and brighten is available as a separate service.
