How Cedar Siding and Shake Should Be Cleaned

Cedar is a soft, porous, living material, and it does not forgive the treatment that harder surfaces shrug off. Here is what cedar siding and shake actually need, what pressure does to them, and how coastal Charleston homes should be maintained.

Why cedar behaves differently than fiber cement

Fiber cement is a dense manufactured board with a factory coating on top. Cedar is wood. It has open grain, it absorbs and releases moisture with the weather, and its surface is soft enough to mark with a fingernail. That difference changes everything about how it should be cleaned.

Because cedar is porous, it holds moisture longer than a sealed surface does. In Charleston humidity that means the shaded faces of a cedar home stay damp well into the day, and damp wood is exactly what algae, mildew, and moss are looking for.

What pressure does to cedar

A pressure washer aimed at cedar does visible damage quickly, and some of it cannot be undone:

  • Raises and furs the grain
  • Gouges and carves lines into soft wood
  • Strips stain, sealer, and paint unevenly
  • Drives water deep into the boards
  • Loosens, splits, or blows out shake pieces
  • Leaves fuzzy texture that grips dirt faster

Furred grain is the one homeowners regret most. Once the surface fibers are lifted, the wall no longer sheds water and dirt the way smooth cedar does, so it gets dirty again sooner and the next cleaning is harder. Water forced into the boards is the quieter problem: it does not evaporate quickly here, and trapped moisture feeds rot and interior growth long after the wash looks finished.

Why cedar goes grey and mossy near the water

Two separate things are happening on most weathered cedar homes, and it helps to tell them apart.

The first is natural weathering. Sunlight and rain break down the surface of the wood and whatever finish is on it, and the exposed fibers turn silver-grey. Many homeowners on the islands like that look and choose to keep it.

The second is biological growth. Shaded elevations, north-facing walls, and anything under live oak canopy stay damp, and salt air near the marsh and beach adds a film that holds moisture against the wood. That is where the green streaking, the black mildew, and the fuzzy moss in the shake gaps come from. Growth is not weathering, and unlike weathering it keeps spreading and keeps holding moisture against your siding.

The gentle approach

  1. Read the wall first Species, condition, existing finish, and how much growth is actually present all change the plan before anything gets wet.
  2. Apply a surface-appropriate solution The solution treats the growth at the root so chemistry does the work instead of force. Cedar gets a gentler mix than harder surfaces do.
  3. Rinse at low pressure Closer to heavy rain than to a jet, worked with the grain and the lay of the shake so nothing lifts or channels.
  4. Protect what is nearby Landscaping pre-wetted and rinsed, fixtures covered, runoff controlled, and photos sent when the job is finished.

We never put high pressure on siding, and cedar is the surface where that policy matters most.

Finishes differ in type and age, and an eight-year-old stain that is already thinning behaves nothing like one applied last spring.

Knowing what is on the wood lets us plan the cleaning around it and give you an honest picture of how the surface will look once it dries. If a refinish is the right next step for your home, we will say so plainly rather than pretend a wash will do that job.

Shake versus board, in plain terms

Cedar board siding is a flatter, more continuous surface. Water runs off it, dirt sits on it, and rinsing is straightforward.

Cedar shake is made of many small overlapping pieces. That creates edges, gaps, and shadowed pockets where moisture lingers and moss establishes itself, especially along the bottom courses and under overhangs. Shake also has more individual pieces to loosen, which is another reason force is the wrong tool. Practically speaking, shake takes more patience and more rinse time than board, and it usually shows growth first.

A maintenance rhythm for coastal homes

Most cedar homes near the water do well on a yearly cleaning, with the understanding that not every elevation ages at the same rate. The sunny front of a house on Kiawah or Sullivan's Island can look clean while the shaded side is already greening. Catching growth on a regular rhythm keeps it from establishing deeply, which means each cleaning is gentler than the last one would have been. Cedar siding cleaning FAQ

Can cedar siding be pressure washed?
It should not be. Cedar is soft and porous, so a concentrated jet of water raises and furs the grain, gouges the surface, and drives water into the wood. That damage is permanent, and on shake it can loosen or split individual pieces.
Why has my cedar turned grey?
Sunlight and weather break down the surface of the wood and any finish sitting on it, and the exposed fibers weather to a silver-grey. On shaded and coastal walls you also get algae, mildew, and moss, which read as green or black instead of silver. Cleaning removes the growth; the weathered tone in the wood itself is part of how cedar ages.
Will cleaning bring my cedar back to its original color?
Cleaning lifts growth, salt film, and surface dirt, and cedar usually looks much better afterward. It does not undo years of weathering inside the wood fibers. Restoring the original tone is a refinishing conversation, not a cleaning one.
