How to Clean an Ipe Deck Without Ruining It

Why ipe is different from a normal deck

Ipe and garapa are dense hardwoods from the tropics. That is why they last for decades in a climate like ours. It is also why they cost much more than a normal treated pine deck. The care should match what you paid.

Most deck cleaning tips were written for soft wood like pine. A method that is only rough on pine can leave lasting marks on ipe. The top of each board is a thin, tight layer of very hard wood. Once you damage it, the only fix is to take more wood off. You do not want to do that to a hardwood deck.

What high pressure does to ipe

A high pressure blast is the fastest way to ruin a costly deck. On dense hardwood it can:

• Raise the grain and leave a fuzzy surface
• Dig into softer spots between the grain lines
• Leave wand marks and stripes that do not wash out
• Open up small cracks already in the boards
• Strip the wood unevenly, so the color looks blotchy
• Shorten the life of the deck

Why ipe turns grey

3. Brighten to bring back the color Next, a wood brightener evens out the surface. The color looks the same from board to board, not blotchy. This step makes a deck look restored, not just washed.
4. Oil if you want the color to last longer This step is your choice, and it is separate. Oil brings back a deeper color. It shields the wood from sun, salt air and humidity. That slows the grey from coming back.
